Another Sporting Curse

Chicago blames its 99-year World Series drought on a curse that was placed on the club by a Greek immigrant, who was annoyed that his pet goat that was ejected from the 1945 World Series game at Wrigley Field. Legend tells that Billy Sianis took his goat to game four against the Tigers. The animal had been left outside his tavern with a sign on it saying, ‘We got Detroit’s goat’. Sianis and his pet were ejected from the stadium by Philip Knight Wrigley, the Chicago Cubs owner, due to the animal’s smell. After Chicago lost the World Series, Sianis wrote to Wrigley saying, ‘Who stinks now?’ The club hasn’t won a NL pennant or played in a World Series since, which is the longest drought in MLB history.
