Mark Prior Returns to Cubs Next Year?

Mark Prior, Alex Rodriguez, the Chicago Cubs, Jason Kendall, and Geovany Soto are among the most discussed topics this week.

Mark Prior is certainly young enough to make a return to the team from rehab and continue being a top pitcher. The Chicago Cubs would like to keep Mark Prior, but what complicates the matter is that the RHP will be a free agent after the following season. Let’s say Chicago signs him for next year, and he will not be able to pitch until August. Then he chooses free agency and leaves for another club. That means Chicago would have paid Prior for 2 months of work. The player received three and a half million dollars in 2007 and did not make one big league start. Chicago has invested a lot of money in the RHP, and in a perfect world, a 2-year contract with incentives through 2009 would make more sense. The question is whether Mark Prior is going to accept that.

Another question is whether there is any chance Chicago would sign Kendall again. The player may become a good investment because he would be able to mentor Soto. Moreover, Kendall is considered one of the best catchers Chicago has signed so far. If the season opened tomorrow, Geovany Soto would be Chicago’s starting catcher. Soto does need tutoring, and Kendall, a free agent, has to decide if he wants a backup role.

Mark Cuban has expressed an interest in buying the Cubs. The owners of MLB are going to meet in Chicago in November, and there could be some discussion at that time about the Cubs.
